Matthew B. Steinberg is Co-Managing Partner in the Lexington office of Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A. He is a highly accomplished and dynamic attorney with a keen focus on innovative solutions to complex litigation, government investigations, and regulatory compliance matters for the healthcare industry. Mr. Steinberg's expertise extends to various areas, including intellectual property and internet law, fraud and abuse investigations, product liability, premises liability, labor and employment, medical malpractice, professional liability, dental practices, business and commercial litigation, and white-collar criminal defense.
Prior to joining QPWB, Mr. Steinberg held several senior-level positions at a national healthcare system in Louisville, KY, beginning in 2002. He served as the director and counsel of liability claims, where he oversaw the management of claims and provided legal guidance. Subsequently, he assumed the role of senior vice president of litigation, leading the company's litigation practices and serving as the in-house deputy general counsel. In this capacity, he managed a team of lawyers, claims handlers, paralegals, and administrative staff, working closely with the Chief Compliance Officer to ensure compliance investigations and audits were conducted effectively. He also played a key role in cyber-security response, data breach response, and eDiscovery protocols.
While serving as Deputy General Counsel for Kindred/Scion, Mr. Steinberg worked on a myriad of complex commercial disputes including, but not limited to, breach of contract, lease disputes, unfair business practice claims, tortious interference claims, breach of representations and warranties, unfair trade practices, claimed breach of privacy rights, alleged anti-trust claims, unjust enrichment claims, property damage disputes, insurance bad faith claims, claims regarding failure to repair, insurance claims related to loss of business or business interruption, and other various general commercial claims. While working for the firm, Mr. Steinberg continues working on commercial disputes including claims by a former landlord relating to alleged property damage caused by a former tenant, claims by a hospital that a vendor breached their contract in repairing critical imaging equipment causing lost profits and excessive repair costs, and claims related to the liability of a property owner for injuries caused on their premises.
Throughout his tenure, Mr. Steinberg acted as the primary point of contact for federal and state agencies, such as the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Office of Inspector General (OIG). His expertise and strategic guidance helped mitigate compliance issues and resolve over 700 cases across a wide range of areas, including medical malpractice defense, class actions, stockholder derivative suits, appraisal rights actions, anti-trust litigation, investigations for alleged False Claims and Anti-Kickbacks, commercial disputes, insurance matters, and unfair business practice cases. Moreover, he provided legal oversight for privacy regulations, including HIPAA, HITECH, CCPA, and other state-specific regulations, and actively served on various committees, including the Company's Data Privacy Steering Committee, Record Retention Steering Committee, CIA Steering Committee, Executive Corporate Compliance Committee, Culture Catalyst Team, and Executive Steering Committee - Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Steinberg worked as a senior associate, where he gained valuable experience handling and organizing class action lawsuits, multi-district litigation, white-collar criminal matters, and Jones Act claims. He served as first and second chair counsel in state, federal, and appellate level matters, representing clients in a wide range of legal issues. His practice encompassed environmental claims, trademark infringement claims, and general employment litigation for local corporations.
Mr. Steinberg's commitment to public service extends to his time as a United States Navy veteran. Serving as Officer-in-Charge of the busiest detachment of the Navy Trial Service Office for the entire Southeast Region, including Cuba and South America, he investigated, assigned counsel, and prosecuted criminal cases involving arson, murder, drug use, embezzlement, misrepresentation, and theft of government secrets.
Mr. Steinberg received his Juris Doctor from Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, graduating with honors, and his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Kentucky majoring in history and political science.
He is licensed to practice law in Kentucky, Indiana, Florida, and Georgia and is a member of Bar Associations in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, and Indiana, the Healthcare Compliance Association, and the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel. He is a Certified Electronic Discovery Specialist.
