Timothy J. Sweeney is an associate in the Tampa office of Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A. He has over 33 years of experience as a litigation attorney with a general concentration in all types of litigation and administrative and regulatory law. Mr. Sweeney's practice focuses on insurance defense litigation representing insurers and insureds in first-party property and coverage actions including sinkhole, windstorm, fire, mold, theft, and water losses. His practice also encompasses general liability claims, personal injury and casualty matters, wrongful death actions, automotive liability, premises liability and negligent security actions.
Prior to joining QPWB, Mr. Sweeney was an associate attorney in the Trial and Domestic Violence Divisions of the Public Defender's Office, Thirteenth Judicial Circuit. Previously, he was the owner and CEO of a legal practice concentrating in substance abuse-related criminal and administrative issues; he was also an executive consultant for a nationwide provider of scientifically driven specialty behavioral health services where he was responsible for procuring licensures and handling regulatory and administrative matters. He spent over 18 years as Chief Executive, General Counsel, and Director of Recovering Attorneys' Program, a medical group practice in Tampa, specializing in addiction and substance abuse counseling. Here, Mr. Sweeney handled all corporate and legal matters, risk management and licensure compliance; managed acquisition, zoning and construction of facilities and served as liaison for federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
Mr. Sweeney's legal career commenced in the Financial Services Division of a Dallas, Texas law firm as an associate handling banking law matters related to lender liability defense, bank mergers, and transactional law. Then he moved to Florida and managed a wide variety of commercial litigation in civil, appellate, and federal courts for a Tampa law firm where he focused on real estate foreclosures, loan workouts, lender liability defense, bankruptcy, creditor collections, employment disputes and tort claims.
Mr. Sweeney received his Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois College of Law, Champaign, Illinois in 1988 and a Bachelor of Arts from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1984, graduating with a major in English and political science. While in law school, he served as an associate editor of the Law Review.
Mr. Sweeney is licensed to practice law in Florida and is admitted in the U.S. District Court for the Northern, Middle and Southern Districts of Florida.
